I was born in Monza, near Milan (Italy), and before moving to the UK I studied at the Polytechnic University of Milan, where I earned a Bachelor's degree in Building Engineering and a Master's degree in Structural Engineering, before completing my PhD in Computational Mechanics at Imperial College London.

Developing hybrid differentiable ML/AI-physics simulation capabilities within the Firedrake finite element framework, with a focus on integrating machine learning approaches with physics-based solvers for high-performance scientific computing applications.

Funded by the University of Leicester Impact Development Fund, in collaboration with Prof. Alberto Paganini. Extended the open-source shape optimisation software Fireshape with industrially relevant shell and plate mechanics test cases within the Firedrake finite element framework.

Working on the Re-Thickening Arctic Sea Ice project, funded by ARIA (UK R&D funding agency), with a total project value of £10 million. Co-Investigator on the work package developing advanced, high-performance computational tools for simulating sea ice mechanical behaviour.

January 2023 – June 2024Research FellowMachine Learning for Fluid Flow in Rock FaultsUniversity College London, London, UK
Developed a digital twin of Westerly granite samples using an adjoint-based machine-learning framework to study the evolution of fluid transport properties and heterogeneity during fault development. Presented this research in talks at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and European Geosciences Union (EGU) conferences. Resulted in two journal publications (one published and one under submission).

Developer of tanuki™/PyFDEM, the first parallel, high-performance, pure-Python finite-discrete element code; showcased at the 9th European Congress on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences and Engineering and the 17th US National Congress on Computational Mechanics. Tanuki is a partner in the £10 million RASI project, utilising FDEM models to simulate Arctic sea ice dynamics. Developed practical rheological models to predict plastic viscosity and yield stress from mix composition parameters of fresh concrete as part of a consultancy for Cloud Cycle.

Main researcher on a project fully funded by Petronas. Developed a coupled poroelastic simulation tool to reduce solids production during gas extraction from carbonate reservoirs. Directed experiments on carbonate rock samples conducted at FracTech UK for validation of numerical simulations. Ran comparisons of triaxial tests and advanced thick-walled cylinder tests and corresponding simulations. Delivered a technical report to Petronas.

Developed a computational tool to quantify damage to coastal defence structures (e.g., mass losses) in a project funded by the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account.

Worked on research aimed at developing new technologies to enhance the performance of geothermal wells, as part of a project fully funded by the European Commission. Submitted a technical report to the European Commission and released two scientific publications.

Worked with Johnson Matthey across multiple departments. Collaborated with the Johnson Matthey Technology Centre on mechanical characterisation of catalyst supports and numerical modelling for pellet optimisation. Worked with the R&D team within the Steam Reforming department to model the packing of reactor tubes and deliver purpose-built software for in-house design and engineering applications. These projects resulted in three journal publications and several conference papers.

Worked on an R&D project in collaboration with Transport for London and Bedi Consulting. Analysed fracture propagation in fibre-reinforced lined tunnels, as part of a project fully funded by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Submitted a technical report to ICE and a peer-reviewed publication in Computational Particle Mechanics.
